Explosion at Barwon Prison forces evacuation

BARWON PRISON: An explosion in an unmanned call has forced the partial evacuation of the jail.

AN EXPLOSION at Barwon Prison has forced a partial evacuation at the maximum security jail.

“There was no physical damage, no injuries, but police and ambulance services have been notified and are attending,” Corrections Victoria said in a statement.

“It’s being treated as an isolated incident and the prison is operating as normal.”

Police described the blast as small and said no serious injuries were sustained. They said the affected area was evacuated and emergency services in attendance after the explosion occurred shortly before 1pm.

It is understood a small unidentified package contained the explosive. A second package was intercepted as well.

Corrections Victoria told the ABC a small bang occurred during routine intelligence searches at the prison.

Barwon Prison, on Bacchus Marsh Road north of Corio, is home to some of Australia’s most dangerous prisoners, many from the ‘Underbelly’ era.
