GEELONG band The Human Electric is young, hip and ready to take over the world, according to bass player Dylan Snelling.
Snelling said the band, also featuring his twin Kurt, Ben O’Borne and Daniel Burgess, wanted to shake-up the rock mould.
“We’re trying to shake the image of being a hard rock band. We want to branch out and experiment with the music,” he said.
“We’ve been together for three years now as a band but when it comes to it we can write some really pretty stuff.”
Snelling described the band’s latest album, 2011 as filled with hard rock tracks and a surprise twist.
“We’re more experimental this time. We’ve got more of a rocky edge in this release but have also recorded an acoustic song, which we haven’t done before.”
The Snelling twins met O’Borne at Bellarine Secondary College during their high school years before stumbling across Burgess in a chance meeting.
“We all grew up idolising punk rockers, Murder Ace, Foo Fighters and even old stuff like The Rolling Stones and Tom Waits, so this band comes really naturally to us,” Snelling said.
“Then when we met Daniel he brought in a blues and an old-school influence which has worked really well.
“He’s a raw character and a great singer and it works.”
Snelling said the band had found branching out in Geelong difficult due to the city’s “strong heavy-metal orientation”.
But after three years of chipping away the band was now filling pubs and clubs across Geelong and Melbourne.
“Our last release at Barwon Club had over 400 people attend. It’s a great feeling,” Snelling said.
“We’ve played to just the sound guy and just our girlfriends but now to see us grow with every gig is amazing. We push as much as we can and just hope the right person sees us and give us our break.”
Snelling said the band members still had day jobs while working toward their dream.
“I’m a spray painter, Ben is an associate for Domino’s pizza, my brother is a tattoo artist and Dan is a credit investigator,” he laughed.
“But we can still produce straight up, really ballsy rock.”
The Human Electric plays Geelong’s Bended Elbow on Saturday night.
