PORTARLINGTON residents will open their homes to billet National Celtic Festival performers this weekend.
More than 250 international and national performers will roll into town during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend to take part in the celebration of Celtic culture.
Festival director Una McAlinden said the residents had willingly taken on roles as “ambassadors” for the event and region.
“When we first came to Portarlington we brought lots of volunteers with us and there were a few locals who helped out but now it’s predominantly locals and there are about 150 volunteers at this year’s event,” Ms McAlinden said.
“I think they’re proud of the event and feel they’re part of it.”
Ms McAlinden said about 30 families had offered their homes to accommodate performers.
Other volunteer roles covered site set up, venue management, ticket sales and bar work, she said.
The festival will showcase all things Irish and Scottish, including musical performances and concerts, traditional food and beverage stalls, cultural displays and workshops.
The seventh annual festival will also celebrate the 250th birthday of famous Irish stout Guinness and Scottish poet Robbie Burns.
Performers will appear at Portarlington’s Ol’ Duke, celtic club, Wine Bar, Parks Hall and village stage.
