A 25 year Australian Defence Force veteran will head up Geelong’s bid for the Land 400 contract, Mayor Darryn Lyons has announced.

Matthew Jones brings “wide ranging expertise including operations planning, communications, cyber and electronic warfare,” to the role, Cr Lyons said.

“Mr Jones’ experience means he has a close understanding of the technical requirements of the project and an extensive list of defence industry contacts.”

Cr Lyons said Mr Jones would serve as a project consultant to the Land 400 bid and steering committee.

He said Mr Jones had graduate qualifications in management with extensive military communications and electronic warfare operations and planning experience.

He was awarded the Commendation for Distinguished Service in 2012 for his role in the Australian Defence Force Middle East Counter Improvised Explosive Program.

Geelong will host second industry day on 15 April to introduce the leading defence contractors to Geelong.

The industry day will be used to outline why Geelong was the logical centre to deliver the Land 400 project, Cr Lyons said.
