Organisers hope for a fair return

KIM WATERS
Wallington Primary School mums will bunker down to hull more than 350 punnets of strawberries in three hours this weekend for the school’s annual fundraising fair.
Wallington Strawberry Fair organiser Glenda Dixon said the region’s recent wet weather had boosted crops of the fruit with a bumper harvest of “lovely, big” berries.
The event was returning this year after making way for construction of a multi-purpose hall in 2010, she said.
“People called up all year asking whether they’d missed it and everyone is very geared up that it’s back on.”
Ms Dixon said this year’s fundraising target was “at least $25,000” to buy laptops.
“We don’t have any other fundraising during the year, so that’s why we aim to make so much.
“Because it’s a local community, people feel more ownership of the event and everyone at the school is involved.”
Ms Dixon said the fair would feature strawberries presented with cream, dipped in chocolate on top of pancakes and as jam.
“We’re also running the famous Poo Lotto again, which is a big tarp on the ground with numbered squares and people pay money for a certain square. Then we get an animal from the nursery, either a duck or a goat or a rabbit, and wait until the animal poos on one of the squares – the winner gets $50 and it causes quite a lot of discussions and laughter.”
Wallington Primary School Strawberry Fair starts 10am Sunday.
