Hosting a leg of world cycling championships will cost Geelong removal of “some” roundabouts and the installation of a temporary bridge at Queen’s Park, organisers and the city’s mayor have revealed.
Event organisers said the existing one-lane bridge linking Highton and Newtown was too narrow to meet the course requirements.
Melbourne 2010 Cycling chairman Steve Bracks said the temporary 50-metre bridge would deliver the “best possible” course to showcase Geelong to a “massive international audience in the best possible way”.
Geelong Mayor John Mitchell said the Bailey bridge would allow the region to host the five-day event without compromising the natural beauty of Queen’s Park.
“We have not been asked to resurface any part of the 16-kilometre circuit although we will be removing some roundabouts and other traffic treatments to maintain the minimum six-metre road width required by the UCI,” Cr Mitchell said
He said the Bailey bridge would be “disassembled and reinstatement works would be undertaken” after the event to ensure the area is returned to its existing condition.
The 2010 UCI Road World Championships starts on September 29.
