Parents’ mark F for speeding

Alex de Vos
Geelong motorists are still thumbing their noses at special speed limits outside schools despite increased media coverage warning drivers to slow down, according to police.
Geelong Traffic Management Unit Leading Senior Constable Maurie Banks said police nabbed 38 drivers speeding in the zones at the start of the school year this week.
Police busted one motorist more than 20km/h over the 40km/h school zones limit.
Snr Const Banks described the results as “extremely disappointing”.
“It shows a complacency among drivers,” he said.
“The signs are there and they’re clearly visible at all schools and apply throughout Victoria.
“Saying they’re unfamiliar with the rules doesn’t gel with us.”
Snr Const Banks pointed the finger at parents rushing between schools to ferry their children.
“They’re all well aware of the school crossing, so it’s no excuse.”
Snr Const Banks warned that police would run the blitz for five months.
“It’s an ongoing operation that is being run for longer this year,” he said.
“Since we’ve run this operation there hasn’t been one injury reported to police, which indicates the program is working.”
Snr Const Banks urged motorists to slow down in school zones.
“It’s extremely disappointing so many motorists have been caught speeding so early in the year despite all the media attention,” he said.
“People need to wake up and take responsibility for what they’re doing.”
The 40km/h speed limits operate from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm outside all schools around the Geelong region.
