A LAWN bowls first for disabled people has launched in Geelong.
The first bowl rolled down the green on Tuesday evening for Geelong’s All Abilities Lawn Bowling League.
Host clubs Geelong West and Drumcondra have been driving the new competition with facilities and coaches.
Leisure Networks’ Steve Tibbits said the competition helped “make the connection” between bowling clubs and the disabled community.
“There has never been a (bowls) league specifically for people with disabilities,” he said.
“What we’re trying to do is create a league that’s as close to mainstream as possible.
“There have been cases of people with disabilities having great success but generally (lawn bowls) hasn’t been seen by the disability community as an option.”
All Abilities Lawn Bowling League runs Tuesday nights from 5pm until 6pm. Entry costs $20 for the inaugural 10-week season.
