A PROPOSED redraw of electoral boundaries would help the Liberals’ bid to reclaim Corangamite at the next federal election, according to a politics expert.
Deakin politics Professor Geoffrey Robinson said Labor incumbent Darren Cheeseman would need a “significant” swing in his favour to win a third election.
The electoral redistribution taking Queenscliff and Ocean Grove out of Corangamite and into the safe ALP seat of Corio was “actually quite bad news for Labor”, Prof Robinson said.
“It’s pushing Corangamite further to the west into very safe Liberal areas around Camperdown. If you look the voting this time, Labor’s vote was up in the Geelong parts of the seat, including areas in which Labor is losing, and actually fell in some parts of the rural part of the seat.”
