Intervention comes too late as three men suffer lonely deaths

AN ELDERLY man died in Geelong Hospital yesterday, days after the body of his carer son was found by a relative in their Hamlyn Heights home.
The son, found slumped in the same room as his father, had been dead for up to five days.
Police confirmed yesterday that the 88-year-old incapacitated Hamlyn Heights man had died after he was taken to hospital following the discovery of the body of his son.
He had been found sitting in an armchair in his Mossgiel Crt home on Wednesday afternoon with the gas fire blazing and his dead son on the floor.
The son had been his carer. A relative alerted authorities after he became concerned that he had not heard from them for a while and went to visit them. The door was forced to gain entry.
Ambulance crews reported that the frail, elderly man had been confused when transported to hospital.
In another tragic fatality, where intervention also came too late, the body of a 49-year-old Norlane man was discovered in his bedroom at his Sparks Rd home on Tuesday.
He had been dead for up to four weeks and his pet dog had been gnawing at the foot of its dead owner.
Police discovered the body after a welfare check, prompted by neighbours reporting that the dog had been barking repeatedly.
A report will be prepared for the state coroner.
Police said that there are no suspicious circumstances in all three deaths.
In other news, a 22-year-old Elaine man was taken to Geelong Hospital suffering gunshot wounds to his left thigh after an incident in Corio on Wednesday night.
Paramedics were called to Cox Rd just after 9.30pm after reports that a man had been shot.
It is believed that the shooting followed a confrontation at a Cox Rd property.
Police are investigating.
