AUSTRALIA’S troubled National Broadband Network has stuffed up again in Geelong.
Geelong customers of Australia’s second largest internet provider were told to get ready for the NBN – but it was a mistake.
ISP iiNet emailed Geelong customers to prepare them to receive NBN equipment inside and outside their homes.
The email said Geelong customers would receive a wireless connection requiring an antenna mounted either under eaves or on the roof.
However, a scan of the NBN rollout plan showed no construction under way locally.
Geelong was on the cusp of an NBN rollout when a change of federal government put it on hold.
An iiNet spokesperson confirmed the information was incorrect.
“I can confirm that NBN Co has provided incorrect data to their retail service providers and they have apologised to us directly for the error.
“iiNet will be writing to every customer to receive this incorrect information to apologise on behalf of NBN Co.
“Geelong has not been targeted for an early roll-out of NBN fibre.”
The company subsequently emailed Geelong customers, saying: “Whoops … We got a little carried away.
“Yesterday we let you know that construction of NBN Fixed Wireless services had begun in your local area.
“NBNCo have since advised that the information they provided to us, and other retail service providers, was incorrect.
“On behalf of iiNet, I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience we may have caused. When the NBN does roll into your area, we’ll be in touch once again with the good news.”
