Cats hit by ruck losses again

Geelong ruckman/forward Mitch Clark is looking unlikely for this week with his calf injury, coach Christ Scott has conceded.

The Cats were hopeful of getting Clark fit for Saturday night’s crucial clash with Essendon at Etihad Stadium.

Scott said the medical team had gone into rehabilitation mode for Clark, who could miss up to two weeks.

But there was better news for Geelong’s other big man injury from the disastrous outing against West Coast, Rhys Stanley.

“We are expecting him to play,” Scott said.

“If not he would (miss) only be one week.”

Scott cited Josh Walker and the still-surprising Mark Blicavs to handle the ruckwork against the Bombers.

Geelong has all four of its recognised ruckmen on the injury list, with Hamish McIntosh and Dawson Simpson also on the sidelines.

“We’ve been used to it – that’s the glass half full answer,” Scott said ruefully.

“It’s unusual to have both your ruckmen injured in the same game.”

Geelong recruited both Clark and Stanley to bolster its ruck stocks because the Cats often had to name a pinch-hitting ruck set up last season.
