Willy gritty troupe be your cup of tea?

Jane Emerick
Torquay Theatre Troupe will expand its repertoire next month when it tackles confronting issues like domestic abuse in Two One Act Plays.
Founding member Carleen Thoernberg said the “gritty” subject matter would test the troupe as well as audiences.
“The troupe has always chosen plays we knew would be a beautiful evening for audiences,” she said.
“This year the we’re doing a third season for the first time to give actors the chance to do something really gritty, something confronting.”
“It’s a story about a man who has a brief encounter with a woman in a shop while shopping for his mistress,” she said.
“The play is very poignant, soft and beautiful.”
Break my Heart, featuring actordirector Steven Georgiadis on stage with Lisa Berry, would confront audiences with abuse and shame.
“It’s a very confronting, disturbing play,” Ms Thoernberg said.
“It uses strong language and scenes of violence are acted out.”
Janine McKenzie directs Michael Lambkin and Terry Roseburg in the first play, Elegy For a Lady, exploring issues of grief and loss.
Ms Thoernberg recommended the plays to audiences with a taste for difference.
“These plays are not the type we normally do,” she said.
“We’ll go back to plays more widely appealing in the future but these will be great for audiences who enjoy a challenge.”
Two One Act Plays runs 8pm on August 2 to 4 and 9 to 11 at Torquay’s Senior Citizens Hall, in Price Street.
