Herbert caps big Supercats week

Andrew Mathieson
GEELONG Supercats guard Nathan Herbert has capped a premiership week with his club’s most valuable player award.
The son of former Geelong great Craig Herbert polled 97 votes to comfortably head off import Jamal Brown (87) and Jason Reardon (85).
Herbert’s personal win came a day after his team’s victory at Australian Basketball Association national titles in Newcastle.
Geelong defeated Big V champion Dandenong 94-80 in the championship final.
The championship followed victories over South Eastern Australia Basketball League south conference counterparts Knox 93-81 in the semi-final and Queensland’s Southern District Spartans 100-92 in the quarters.
The championship was the Supercats’ second national victory after winning in 1999.
The Supercats earned their ABA title shot after thrashing Canberra Gunners a week earlier at the Arena.
