Eye on the wild

An exhibition of the world’s best wildlife photography has opened in Geelong.
The images in Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 would be on display in Geelong and nowhere else in Victoria, said Mayor Darryn Lyons.
With a photography background, Cr Lyons was “thrilled” Geelong had secured the exhibition for a second year in a row.
Geelong was also the launch site of its national tour last Friday night, he said.
Moorabool Street’s National Wool Museum will host the exhibition until 15 May.
Patrons could inspect “100 awe-inspiring images from the world’s most prestigious photography event of its kind,” the museum said.
“Wrestling komodo dragons, ethereal egrets and thirsty squirrels are among the creatures captured on camera for Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015.”
The competition received over 42,000 entries from 96 countries, “highlighting its enduring appeal as a showcase for the natural world’s most astonishing and challenging sights”, the wool museum said. “The 100 winning images in the exhibition were selected from 18 individual category winners, depicting nature at its finest, from displays of extraordinary animal behaviour to sublime landscapes.
“The competition is judged by an international panel of industry-recognised professionals. Images, submitted by both professional and amateur photographers, are selected for their creativity, artistry and technical complexity.”
The exhibition would run alongside a display of local images submitted to a Geelong by Nature Photography Competition, the museum said.
All the entries would be on display in the museum’s “Cabinet of Curiosities Lounge”.
