Icon closes in ‘entries flood’

ENTRIES for Geelong’s competition to find a landmark design have closed with a field of almost 80 submissions.
Icon for Geelong’s organising committee will now begin sorting entries to shortlist the best for judging and coverage in the Geelong Independent, a competition sponsor.
The paper’s managing editor, Tony Galpin, said dozens of entries arrived just in time for the deadline of Saturday.
“I arrived at work on Monday morning to a flood of last-minute entries,” Mr Galpin said.
“Obviously a lot of finishing touches were completed late last week.”
Mr Galpin said architects, graphic designers and artists were widely represented among entrants.
“We also have plenty of submissions from everyday readers who were inspired to put forward their ideas for Geelong.”
Mr Galpin said the Independent would present a special report on the best “and some interesting” entries in the next few weeks after the committee had completed its initial review.
“We’ll also run stories on some of the feedback and general suggestions about an icon for Geelong.”
Icon for Geelong seeks a design for a landmark structure or building of artistic merit to raise the city’s profile throughout the world.
The competition carries a prize of $10,000 from Geelong’s Senia Lawyers.
The winner will be revealed in March.
Senia Lawyers principal Andrew Senia said the number and quality of entries was exciting.
“Some entries are simply magnificent. They inspire recognition and prestige for our lovely city of Geelong.
“I can see how the icon will enhance the image of Geelong, attract visitors and permanent residents to create business and jobs.”
