A 12-YEAR-OLD Newcomb boy has raised a third of the proceeds from an annual fundraising swim for victims of a disease afflicting his mother.
Haydon Loader finished last weekend’s 24 Hour Mega Swim for multiple sclerosis (MS) with the state’s highest individual fundraising total for the annual event.
Organisers said Haydon raised $8,660 among 80 swimmers in Geelong who pooled a combined total so far of $26,000.
Haydon accepted a sponsor’s challenge to swim 100 laps, or the equivalent of five kilometres, at a rate of $1 a lap.
“My mother lives with multiple sclerosis, so I know first-hand the challenges of the disease,” he said.
Cats star Shanon Byrnes, who also has a family member with MS, also participated in the swim.
Proceeds go to MS Australia’s Go For Gold scholarships for sufferers of the disease to pursue goals in a range of fields including arts, business and sport.
