DEAKIN University architecture students have produced a series of inspiring Icon for Geelong designs, according to their lecturer.
Jeremy Ham said the students produced the designs as part of a unit project, with many likely to be entered in the Icon for Geelong competition.
“They came up with all sorts of ideas,” Mr Ham said.
“Some of them were out there, like relocating Skilled Stadium onto a pier in the middle of Corio Bay…others were ideas like bungy jumping towers on the foreshore, light installations or structures framing the view of Geelong.”
Mr Ham called many of the designs “simple but achievable”, with potential to win the Icon for Geelong competition.
He said almost 60 of the students’ designs were available for inspection at deakin.edu.au/scitech/ab/about/student-work/srd364-t2-2011.php
The Icon for Geelong competition offers a $10,000 cash prize from Senia Lawyers to design a landmark for the city. The competition seeks a design of artistic merit to raise Geelong’s profile around the world.
Icon for Geelong opened earlier this month, with entries closing on January 28 and the winner announced on March 11.
Mr Ham said the competition had created a buzz among Deakin’s design students.
“The $10,000 would be half a year’s wage for the average student.
“From a students’ point of view, it would be good to back themselves and have a go.”
Mr Ham said the competition and design project were also helping forge links between students and the wider Geelong community.
“It’s a great example of where there’s an issue in Geelong, like coming up with an icon or the like, the students can be engaged to provide solutions.”

The Independent, as a sponsor of Icon for Geelong, will provide regular updates and stories on entries.
