ENTRIES and feedback for a competition to design a Geelong landmark have begun pouring in to the Independent, according to the paper’s managing editor.
Tony Galpin said the Icon for Geelong competition had inspired both designs, alternative suggestions and “even some controversy” since opening on August 15.
“This really has the town talking,” Mr Galpin said.
“Everyone has their own idea on what would be the ideal icon to promote Geelong and some of the suggestions and entries have plenty of merit.
“It’s great to see the community taking such interest in this exciting initiative.”
The Icon for Geelong competion carries a $10,000 prize from Senia Lawyers for an artistic landmark design to enhance the city’s international profile.
The competition closes on January, with the winner announced on March 11.
Deakin University’s School of Architecture has posted a competition design brief at dl.dropbox.com/u/24665977/Geelong%20Icon%20-%20Revised%201.5b.pdf.
Grovedale’s Keith Stone-house wrote in with praise for the competition, saying “every city of note” has its own icon.
Mr Stonehouse suggested an indoor sports venue over multiple levels arranged in a triangular shape.
East Geelong’s Toni Coppola recommended a lookout over Corio Bay using the mythological rainbow serpent.
“At night it would light up like a rainbow snake (with a) spotlight on the water.”
Some feedback was critical of the competition, with one contribution saying “dumb dork-head fools” would waste money if they tried building an icon.
Deakin architecture students have submitted their own ideas as part of a university project at deakin.edu.au/scitech/ab/about/student-work/srd-t2-2011.php.
