Warnings go out as big waves roll in

“Huge waves” forecast to pound the Surf Coast have prompted safety warnings.
Waves over seven metres could arrive mid-week, with lifesaving and surfing bodies urging caution along the coast.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts gale force winds over the Southern Ocean to generate significant wave heights in western Bass Strait on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Senior Meteorologist James Taylor said the big swell compared to Bass Strait’s average significant-wave heights of 2.8m.
“In some places the surf may look inviting during this period, such as along the Surf Coast. However, the largest waves are likely to still be around three to four in this region,’’ Mr Taylor said.
Life Saving Victoria’s Greg Scott said understanding the conditions would be important along the coast this week.
“Always check the local weather for your intended water activity and take time to consider whether your activities are appropriate given the conditions,’’ Mr Scott said.
“It’s also important to be aware of your own abilities. Ask yourself will the weather conditions affect your safety and comfort.’’
Surfing Victoria’s Adam Robertson urged surfers to take care.
“There will be some large surf at exposed breaks for experienced surfers only,” Mr Roberston said.
“Surfing Victoria urges everyone to surf within their limits over the next few days and make sure you surf with a mate.”
