Library gets temporary home

The ground floor of the 'upside down' building will house the temporary Geelong library.

Geelong library will relocate to the ground floor of the state offices building to make way for the start of construction of the new facility later this year.

The library will close on Sunday 2 June, reopening in its temporary location across the road on 17 June.

Geelong West Library will commence extended hours on Monday 3 June.

Regional library corporation chair Cr Andy Richards assured library members all services would continue to be available including access to collections, information technology and children’s programs.

“The location diagonally opposite means that library visitors will be able to see the new Geelong Library and Heritage Centre building progress over the next couple of years,” said Cr Richards.

Mayor Keith Fagg said the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre project would act as a central Geelong landmark.

“The innovative dome design of the new Geelong Library and Heritage Centre project will add a unique signature to Geelong and has the potential to serve as an iconic reference point for our city,” said Cr Fagg.

Economic modelling indicates that visits to the Geelong Library are expected to increase by 400 per cent to reach one million visits a year within five years.

The temporary Geelong Library at State Government Offices will be open from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

The City of Greater Geelong provided $20 million for the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre project, the Victorian Government contributed $15 million and the Commonwealth $10 million.
