Farmer dies after being trapped in baler

A member of Geelong’s high-profile Fagg family has died from injuries sustained in a horrific hay-baler accident.
Don Fagg died in Royal Melbourne Hospital around midnight Wednesday.
The 67-year-old father of three daughters was critically injured when he became trapped in the baler for more than 24 hours.
Emergency services believe that Mr Fagg, who reportedly lived alone, was baling hay at his Mt Duneed property on Monday when the machinery he was operating malfunctioned.
Investigators believed that Mr Fagg was trapped after he climbed off the baler to investigate the fault.
A neighbour found Mr Fagg pinned under the machinery at least 24 hours later, at 6.45pm Tuesday.
The neighbour called triple-zero for help.
Paramedics treated Mr Fagg during a three-hour rescue operation.
He was described as “critically unwell“ when emergency services personnel arrived at the scene.
Rescuers reported that Mr Fagg suffered a severe crush injury to an upper leg.
Emergency services had to cut apart the baler to free him.
An ambulance carried him to University Hospital Geelong in a critical condition on Tuesday night.
An air ambulance helicopter then flew him to Royal Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday morning.
Mr Fagg spend the day in critical condition before dying on Wednesday night.
Worksafe began an investigating of the accident site on Wednesday. The coroner will also investigate.
Mr Fagg was a cousin of Keith and Barry Fagg, the brothers behind Faggs Mitre 10. Keith Fagg was Geelong’s firest directly elected mayor.
Harvesting of hay and crops is underway across much of Victoria as paddocks dry out following a wet spring.
