Redevelopment works have forced Geelong’s Carols by Candelight out of its traditional Johnstone Park venue.
But Kardinia Park has emerged as the event’s saviour, with the park’s management to host the carols on the home ground of the Cats.
Kardinia Park Stadium Trust confirmed the arrangement this week, saying it was “excited” about working with organiser Y Service Club of Geelong to host the “biggest” carols yet.
“Due to redevelopment work at Johnstone Park, the event will be held at GMHBA Stadium, ensuring the carols, which have been a Geelong Christmas Eve tradition since 1965, will go ahead,” the trust announced.
Long-serving carols organiser Noel Hooper expected a bigger crowd this year, thanks to the appeal of the stadium.
Hopper considered the arrangement “a boost for the community”.
“With this year’s Carols being held in such an iconic and accessible venue, we hope to get an extra 2000 to 3000 more people come along,” he said.
Trust chief Michael Brown also welcomed the announcement.
“The trust is looking forward to welcoming the Geelong community to GMHBA Stadium to embrace the festive spirit and enjoy a great night of entertainment,” Brown said.
“I would like to thank the City of Greater Geelong for connecting the trust with the Y Service of Geelong. We have a magnificent Stadium in Geelong, and we are proud to host such a wonderful tradition.”
Organisers said the 53rd Geelong Carols by Candlelight would feature a host of talented local performers including the Mik Maks, Shandelle Cooke and “many more”.
The stadium has a series of other events lined up for the AFL off-season. Event over summer will include a Matildas-versus-China women’s football match, a Big Bash Cricket clash between Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixes, and an A-League soccer clash pitting Melbourne Victory against Central Coast Mariners.
