BLIND visitors to Vision Australia’s Barwon Heads holiday house will soon enjoy the delights of a sensory garden prepared this week.
Vision Australia’s Patti Baldini said the garden would allow the vision-impaired an “enjoyable experience” catering to all the senses.
“It will have vegetables for sense of taste, a sandpit for the kids and sculptures that are tactile. We will encourage people to touch and feel them,” she said.
“Sensory gardens allow families to experience an environment that is safe, pleasurable, creative, stimulating, adventurous and spontaneous.”
The garden will include a network of paths weaving around established Moonah trees and a combination of native indigenous plants donated by Barwon Water Community Nursery.
“Plants donated include native mint for smell and taste and vanilla lily which is scented,” Ms Baldini said.
About 30 volunteer Ford employees will travel from Melbourne to build the garden.
Vision Australia’s Noel Read said the Ford volunteer staff were integral to keeping the dream of completing the garden project alive.
