Torquay mums to trade breakfast for charity run

Alex de Vos
Torquay’s newest mothers will spend their special day pounding the pavement in the name of charity instead of sleeping-in and enjoying a traditional breakfast in bed.
Organisers expect more than 80 new mums to participate in an inaugural Torquay Mother’s Day Classic to raise money for breast cancer research.
Local mum and event organiser Emily Smedley said she was looking forward to the four-kilometre fun run.
“I participated in the event in Melbourne last year and really enjoyed the day,” Ms Smedly said.
“I can’t wait for the local run.”
Ms Smedley, who said she was now used to waking up early thanks to 10-month-old daughter Caitlyn, expected that she had a few more years to wait before enjoying breakfast in bed.
“I’ve got a new baby, so I don’t get a sleep-in anyway,” Ms Smedley said.
“I thought the fun run would be a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day instead.
“I think everyone knows someone who has gone through breast cancer and it’s something that’s close to our hearts.”
Ms Smedley said the event was aimed at new mothers but anyone was welcome to participate.
“We’ll be taking registrations on the day and people can either run or walk,” she said.
“We’ve designed a pram-friendly route and will also be holding a sausage sizzle and a raffle.”
Ms Smedley said registrations would open at 9.15am.
The event would start 10am at a rotunda and picnic area adjoining Surf Beach Road car park.
