Geelong will host its first traditional archery tournament tomorrow.
Organisers expect sixty competitors from around Australia to attend the event at Deakin University.
Geelong Archers vice-president Leigh Adamson said traditional archery was often confused with the modern style of the sport.
“Traditional bows are made predominantly from wood, with leather and natural products. They don’t have sights or stabilisers,” Mr Adamson said.
Uniforms were also much different.
“Some people insist on wearing ancient medieval costumes,” Mr Adamson said.
“They wear hoods, surcoats and leggings and look like something out of King Arthur.”
Although competition in Geelong would be based on ancient archery, Mr Adamson said competitors would use modern targets.
“We definitely will not be shooting animals.”
