Speeding ‘okay’ to Geelong’s lead-footed

Geelong speeders think it’s okay to drive 10km/h over limits, according to Traffic Accident Commission research.
The findings alarmed the TAC, which pointed out that driving 10km/h faster than other traffic doubled the risk of a serious crash.
The TAC unearthed the casual disregard for speeding in “frank focus group discussions” involving drivers with previous speeding offences.
Community relations head Philip Reed said two thirds of participants confessed to “sometimes” speeding in 50, 60 and 80km/h zones.
Almost a quarter “always” drove over the limit in 60km/h zones.
Mr Reed said most focus group participants typically thought driving 10km/h over the limit was “acceptable”.
“This is alarming, especially when Geelong drivers also admit their fear of hitting a pedestrian or child in suburban areas and school zones,” he said.
“Travelling 10km/h faster than the rest of the traffic doubles the risk of a serious crash.
“This risk increases nearly six times when travelling 20km/h faster than the traffic.”
Mr Reed said the respondents believed they had little chance of police catching them speeding at “lower levels”.
