Kenny Miller and John Dallimore are two of Geelong’s favourite musical sons, with a musical relationship spanning more than 30 years.
But for Miller, the beginning of their on-stage partnership was completely unexpected.
It was the late 1980s, and Miller was doing the ring around for solo gigs. He called the Lorne Hotel, only to be told they were looking for duo acts, not solo performers.
“John Dallimore had always been a great idol of mine since I saw him playing with (Geelong rock band) Redhouse back when I was 17, 18,” Miller said
“I rang up the Lorne Hotel and (the venue manager) said, what about a duo? I said, I haven’t got one.
“She goes, what’s John Dallimore doing? I said, I don’t know. So she rang him up. Ten minutes later he’s on the phone saying, what do you reckon, Kenny?
“I said no worries, so ever since that day we’ve been playing together – bands, duo stuff – so I’ve been very fortunate.”
Miller and Dallimore hit the Piano Bar on July 11 with the Groove Doctors, a powerhouse band made up of some of Geelong’s best blues and rock exponents, including Hammond maestro Tim Neal and bassist Steve Hobbs.
The Groove Doctors will also feature world-renowned drummer Enrico “Mick” Morena, whose career includes international tours, major festival appearances and studio recordings with a veritable who’s who of the music industry.
Miller said the entire band was “very excited about the whole thing”.
“And if we’re having a good time, (the punters) are going to have a good time,” he said.
“We’ve got quality players here, so it’ll be a great musical experience for everyone, and for ourselves.”
