Cops in hunt for rapist of teenager

By Geelong Story Updates
Police yesterday stepped up their manhunt for a sex attacker who allegedly raped a 15yearold girl at knifepoint in Norlane West on Wednesday night.
The man attacked the girl after she left Corio Leisuretime Centre about 7.40pm.
A police spokesperson said the man approached the girl from behind, covering her mouth and holding a knife to her throat.
The spokesperson said the man then threw the girl to the ground and raped her.
Police said the man attacked the girl in Fountain of Friendship Park, between Wirraway Crescent and Shannahan Drive.
Police said the alleged attack was just metres from the girl’s family home.
The police spokesperson said the girl was severely “traumatised” and recovering in hospital yesterday.
Police did not believe she had suffered serious injuries, the spokesperson said.
Corio police and Melbourne’s Sexual Crimes Unit had spoken to the victim and were combing the area for clues.
Police used dogs in the manhunt yesterday, the spokesperson said.
The attack has shocked residents living near the park.
Greg Querella, who has lived in the area for 20 years and whose home borders the park, said he “could not believe” a young girl had been raped next door.
“This is unheard of in this part. You don’t want this to happen to anyone, especially a young girl,” Mr Querella said.
“What is the world coming to? These walking tracks are used by everybody, kids, elderly and up until now I thought they were safe.
“My 16yearold son walks through this park at night after work and I’ve never worried about his safety. He’s a boy but still I might rethink that.”
Mr Querella wanted more lighting to improve safety in the park.
Police urged anyone with information about the attack to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Police said the man was described as in his 20s with strawberryblonde hair and wearing a grey jumper.
