New Lara sporting facilities open

The Lara Recreation Reserve’s latest upgrades were officially opened last weekend, including a new pavilion and reconstructed basefield field.

Part of Stage Two of the 2019 Lara Recreation Reserve Precinct Masterplan, the $5.5 million project is a shot in the arm for the Lara sporting community.

The Lara Multisport Pavilion will support baseball, cricket and football in Lara, with the 660 metre-square building boasting a large social space, kitchen, four change rooms including female-friendly facilities, two umpires change rooms, timekeepers room, first aid room, viewing areas and storage spaces.

The baseball field now has a synthetic turf infield, new playing shelters, improved irrigation and drainage systems and fencing.

The project was largely funded by Geelong council, with the state government contributing $1 million for the pavilion through its Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken said the new facilities would support Lara’s needs for years to come.

“These comprehensive and all-ability facilities will take sport and recreation in Lara to the next level, especially in women’s sport,” he said.

“The unique design of the pavilion to support baseball, football and cricket under the one roof at the same time will be an important part of this diverse and growing community.”

State Member for Lara Ella George said the Allan government had invested in sporting facilities the whole Lara community could be proud of.

“The Lara Recreation Reserve continues to get better and better, ensuring that Lara is getting the very best facilities for the growing community,” Ms George said.
