Man arrested as part of Geelong fraud investigation

Financial Crime Squad detectives today arrested a 57-year-old Newtown man as part of their investigation into reports of suspected fraudulent activity linked to Geelong based organisation genU.

A warrant was executed at a residential address in Newtown this morning.

The man was interviewed by police and subsequently released pending further enquiries.

genU chief executive officer Clare Amies said genU is extremely disappointed to have been targeted in this way and has been proud that it hasn’t affected genU’s services and its spirit.

“For someone to allegedly take advantage of a not-for-profit organisation who provides important supports and services to vulnerable community members is disgraceful,” said Ms Amies.

“We remain strong and have incredible employees across Australia who continue to provide high-quality services and demonstrate unwavering commitment to our clients, their families and carers, and to our purpose to enrich the lives of others.

“This has not and will not impact our day-to-day service delivery or the way we conduct our business.

“I am pleased the investigation is progressing, and we will continue to work with Victoria Police to ensure justice is served.”

The matter was initially reported to police by the organisation and an investigation commenced in February 2023, after they identified suspicious activity relating to accounts being wrongfully charged to the organisation.

The report was then assessed by police and an investigation commenced.

The activity is alleged to have occurred over about five years and involves several million dollars.

Detectives have obtained financial and business records from the organisation and these continue to be forensically assessed.

Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who may have knowledge of the matter and those responsible.

This information can also be provided to police anonymously.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au
