The City of Greater Geelong has asked property owners to ensure they comply with fire prevention regulations ahead of the municipality’s upcoming inspection period.
Fire prevention inspections of properties in the region will begin “in the coming days”, according to the City, continuing until early 2024.
The first inspections will start in the northern regions of Greater Geelong in November, progressing south over the next few months.
Landowners whose properties are deemed to be “at risk” will receive fire prevention notices, possibly leading to further inspections.
With this summer expected to be particularly conducive to fires, Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan asked everyone to play their part in keeping the community safe.
“We’ve all come to understand the dangers associated with the fire season, and reducing the risks involves everyone following advice and taking the necessary precautions, particularly with the increasingly hot weather,” Mayor Sullivan said.
“I thank the City’s fire prevention officers for their proactive work making the guidelines clear; now I encourage everyone to respond accordingly.”
City Planning and Heritage portfolio chair, Councillor Jim Mason also asked community members to make sure their properties were well-maintained.
“The regulations are created for good reason, so it’s essential that everyone gets onboard and takes the appropriate measures for fire readiness,” Cr Mason said.
“As much as it’s wonderful to have some warmer weather on its way, it’s vital that everyone understands the risks that come with that.
“If everyone maintains their properties and remains alert to any potential hazards, we reduce the chance of any fire incidents over summer.”
