The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race has unveiled the course for its elite men’s and women’s classics in January 2024.
The 2024 classics will retain the direction change implemented in this year’s races, with the course winding its way from the starting line at the Geelong Waterfront through Highton to Moriac before heading to the coast.
After passing through Torquay and Barwon Heads the course leads north to Portarlington Road and into Geelong for the city loop, which includes the challenging Challambra climb.
Race director Scott Sunderland said the course provided greater strategic options and opportunities for all types of riders to win.
“What teams want from a course and how they prepare for our race is always a big consideration,” Mr Sunderland said.
“The teams were very happy with the course. The course created an opportunity for riders to choose how they raced. It ticks all the boxes from a high-performance perspective.
“There will be no surprises, so they can plan well in advance and bring in a little bit more strategy and tactics. They’ll prepare themselves well before their training runs during event week, and that will influence rider selection and who will lead.”
The men’s and women’s races are the major events for the cycling festival, held over the January 28-29 weekend next year, and are the first one-day classics of the 2024 UCI WorldTour calendar.
Registrations are already open for the 2024 TAC People’s Ride, which gives cyclists the chance to pedal alongside Cadel Evans in an event designed for all abilities.
