Speed kills great outdoors at Grove

Ocean Grove residents claim speeding motorists have forced them to retreat indoors for safety.
The residents have called for authorities to act before an out-of-control driver runs down a pedestrian on Lelean Street.
Local police have acknowledged the street could be a “speed trap”.
Onnie van Driel said she was afraid to walk up her street after nearly being “cleaned up”.
“I was walking up the hill and a lady in a four-wheel drive was going so fast down the street I had to jump onto the nature strip before she hit me,” Ms van Driel said.
“It frightened the hell out of me and nearly cost me my life.
“It is a 50-kilometre-an-hour street but no one does it.”
Ms van Driel said she had pleaded for council to do something about the speeding drivers,” she said.
“It’s just got to a point where we are not safe.”
Vince Rowse said motorists “fly down” Lelean Street.
“In summer there are kids playing in the street and it’s very dangerous,” he said.
A police spokesman said officers were working on the street’s problems.
“I’ve heard Lelean Street is a bit of a speed trap,” the spokesperson said.
“We could use a speed camera or hand-held radar to address the problem.”
Earlier this year the Independent revealed other traffic concerns at Ocean Grove about traffic flow and speed through the centre of the town.
A council traffic management study recommends roundabouts at Grubb Road, north of Sinclair Street, Presidents Avenue at Orton Street, Tuckfield Street at Marlin Drive and Wallington Road at Thacker Street.
