Murder accused in court

A Bell Post Hill man charged over a fatal assault near Geelong has faced court.

Ivan Deak, 60, appeared in person at Geelong Magistrates Court on Thursday morning, 11 August, after he was charged with one count of murder.

He is accused of assaulting an 86-year-old man at a Lethbridge address, northwest of Geelong, on Saturday night.

The man died in hospital on Monday afternoon and Deak was charged with murder on Wednesday night.

Police say the men were known to each other.

The prosecutor told the Geelong magistrate police would need 11 weeks to compile their brief of evidence, including reports from a pathologist.

Deak was not represented by a lawyer but he responded “no“ when the magistrate asked if he had any custody management issues.

Deak was remanded in custody to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court on December 9. He did not make an application for bail.

Youth escapee found

A prisoner who escaped from a youth jail in central Victoria has been remanded in custody after he was arrested in Cario on Monday night, August 8.

Shamus Touhy, 22, and Matthew Piscopo, 19, broke out of Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre on Saturday evening.

Piscopo was arrested at a Ballarat home on Monday morning and Touhy at a motel in Corio, more than an hour’s drive from the prison, about 8.30pm.

Touhy was taken into custody by Fugitive Squad members without incident and faced Geelong Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with escaping lawful custody.

He’s also facing charges including criminal damage, stealing a motor vehicle, and theft.

He was remanded in custody to face court again later this month, with his lawyer James Gilfillan requesting he be seen by a nurse, given he takes medication for post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

Touhy was remanded in adult custody after it was considered inappropriate for him to return to youth detention.
