Top surf on way for titles

Victoria’s best young surfers would compete in “pumping waves” at Jan Juc this weekend for an annual Strapper Junior Titles, organisers predicted yesterday.
The event was postponed twice amid lacklustre surf earlier this year but Strapper Surf owner Michael Di Sciascio said some of the best waves for 2007 so far were on the way.
Di Sciascio said the conditions would add to the excitement of the competition, showcasing the state’s best young talent.
“After postponing twice this year for the first time in event’s 18year history, all indications are we will not only get surf but extremely good surf,” he said.
“We have a record number of entries, with 100 juniors taking part.”
The event will be the final competition for the VicHealth Junior Series and will be the decider for the state champion.
DiSciasco encouraged spectators to see top Victorian surfers competing in quality waves.
Reigning national under18 champion Todd Rosewall, of Jan Juc, is favourite to win the men’s title.
Competition starts 7.30pm tomorrow and runs over two days at Jan Juc beach or Torquay Point depending on swell size.
