Election commitments for schools

Several schools across Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast are going to see upgrades if the Labor Party is elected at the federal election this month.

Corangamite MP Libby Coker has had a busy week, making election commitments at five schools across the region.

The biggest commitment was made to Inverleigh Primary School, which would receive $170,000 for an undercover basketball court.

“Inverleigh Primary absolutely needs this undercover court and I’m pleased to commit to provide funding if a Labor government is elected,” she said.

“I know that basketball is a popular sport with the kids of Inverleigh, which has produced some great young basketballers over recent years.

“An undercover court will help to ensure the next generation of local players can train on a quality court that gives them the best chance to enjoy and excel at the sport.

“Basketball continues to be a growing sport, increasingly popular among girls and boys.”

Grovedale College would also get an outdoor basketball through a $50,000 commitment, while Mirripoa Primary School in Mount Duneed would get $40,000 to fence its football oval.

A separate $39,210 commitment would provide students at Surf Coast Secondary College with outdoor fitness equipment and Drysdale Primary School was promised $9800 for classroom IT equipment.

Ms Coker said the funding commitments were part of Labor’s plan to improve school facilities across the nation.

She said they would help get students’ education back on track after all the COVID disruptions of the past two years.
