Young people and families across Inverleigh and surrounding areas are set to enjoy an improved active community space under a new election commitment announced by Stephanie Asher.

In 2021, a pop-up Youth Space initiative was launched in Inverleigh, which has provided a free and safe place for young people to gather, socially and get active together, supervised by the Golden Plains Shire’s youth development team.

Liberal candidate for Corangamite Stephanie Asher visited Inverleigh last week to announce if the Liberal government was re-elected this month, it would invest $700,000 to expand the Inverleigh Active Youth Space to include bike paths and pump track, an upgraded skate park and a social basketball court.

Ms Asher said the commitment would mean happier, healthier and more engaged young people several local communities.

“This investment is a key part of my local plan for Corangamite and means a better space for local young people and families to get together with friends and get active,” she said.

“Improving opportunities for physical and social connections will support the health and wellbeing of young people and families across our area.”

The Golden Plains Shire Council welcomed the election funding commitment, which covered half of the $1.4 million project.

The project was one of six priority projects the Golden Plains Shire was seeking funding for through election commitments in the Corangamite electorate.

The other priority projects included the Bannockburn netball pavilion, Bannockburn Family Services Centre expansion, Bannockburn skate and pump track, Inverleigh Recreation Reserve lighting upgrade and Bannockburn Recreation Precinct upgrade.

Both Liberal and Labor have committed $690,000 to the netball pavilion, while Labor’s Libby Coker has also committed $450,000 to the family services centre expansion.
