Man charged over Bell Park shooting

Armed Crime Squad detectives have arrested and charged a man following a non-fatal shooting in Bell Park just over one week ago.

Special Operations Group officers assisted detectives in executing a search warrant at a Britannia Street, Geelong West address about 2.45pm on Friday.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at the address and later interviewed by detectives.

The Geelong West man was charged with aggravated burglary, intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence, attempted aggravated carjacking, possessing firearm while prohibited and theft.

He was remanded to appear in the Geelong Magistrates Court today.

A 28-year-old Geelong man was also arrested and charged with possessing a drug of dependence and was bailed to appear at the Geelong Magistrates Court in April next year.

The charges stemmed from an incident outside a Carissa Mews property where a 40-year-old Bell Park man was shot in the upper and lower body about 4.50pm on Sunday, December 12.

He was taken to hospital in a serious condition and remains undergoing treatment.

A third man was arrested at the address on Friday but was released without charge.

Police put a call out for information last week, with Armed Crime Squad Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Brad Potts saying the offender had fled the scene on foot.

Witnesses reported hearing an argument before the shooting, with police confirming the victim’s motorbike was found in the property’s front yard but they were unsure “how it fits into the situation”.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at crimestoppersvic.com.au
