Man charged over fatal shooting

A man accused of shooting his younger brother dead at a Whittington house on Monday night has faced court charged with murder.

Haig Arslanian, 39, of Whittington, faced Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning on one count of murder.

Mr Arslanian’s lawyer Michael Brugman told the court his client had no criminal record but had a diagnosed history of schizophrenia.

The deceased in the matter was his younger brother, also from Whittington, the court heard.

Police and paramedics rushed to the Boundary Road house about 7.20pm on Monday night after receiving reports a man had been shot.

Emergency services were unable to revive a 31-year-old Whittington man, who died at the scene, according to police.

Police arrested Mr Arslanian at a Leopold house just before 6am on Tuesday where, according multiple reports, he had taken refuge with a friend.

Homicide Squad detectives interviewed Mr Arslanian before charging him with murder over the alleged fatal shooting.

He appeared before Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning for a filing hearing.

A magistrate adjourned the matter and remanded Mr Arslanian in custody to appear in court again on March 5, 2021.

Victoria Police spokesperson Leading Senior Constable Natalie Dean said detectives were not “searching for anyone else in relation to the incident”.
