Man faces charges over seven home-made ‘explosive devices’

Police discovered seven home-made “explosive devices” at a Waurn Ponds address on Sunday before arresting a 31-year-old man.

Emergency services were initially called after an unknown device was set alight near a letter box outside a Monterey Drive address about 2.45am.

The item was engulfed in flames but was quickly extinguished by firefighters, a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“No one was injured during the incident.”

Detectives returned to the scene later in the morning to continue their investigation and located another suspicious device in a nearby tree.

Bomb Response Unit officers attended to examine the device and police cordoned off the immediate area until the explosive specialists deemed it safe.

Police then arrested a 31-year-old Waurn Ponds man.

Following the arrest, detectives located seven home-made explosive devices as part of their investigation.

Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives interviewed the man and before charging him with manufacturing explosives, using explosives and conduct endangering life.

He is scheduled to face the charges at Geelong Magistrates Court this morning.

Investigators continued to process the scene on Monday morning and the investigation remained ongoing, the police spokesperson said.

They urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
