A ute crashed into the back of a truck and become stuck underneath its trailer on Princes Freeway at Little River about 6.30am on Tuesday morning.
An ambulance helicopter flew the male driver of the ute to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition with upper body injuries, an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed.
A Royal Melbourne Hospital spokesperson later told the Independent the man, in his 20s, remained in a stable condition.
Police closed all Geelong-bound lanes of Princes Freeway following the accident.
“The collision between a car and a truck is about 2km before the Little River Road exit,” a police spokesperson said.
“Emergency services are responding to the collision on the Princes Freeway, Geelong-bound.”
A VicRoads spokesperson said the collision had caused massive delays for Geelong-bound traffic and advised motorists to defer travel toward Geelong if possible.
“If essential travel must be undertaken, a significant detour via Ballan Road through Werribee to Bacchus Marsh-Geelong Road is possible,” the spokesperson said.
“Although this will add more than 50km to the journey. All lanes of the Princes Freeway will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.”
