Driver, 19, to face charges over hit run

A 19-year-old Leopold man is expected to face charges over a hit run that injured a 13-year-old cyclist earlier this month, according to police.

A 13-year-old was riding his bike when a sedan struck him at the intersection of Dorothy Street and Allanvale Avenue, Leopold, about 4.40pm on August 8, police said.

Police alleged the driver failed to stop and assist the rider.

“The victim was taken to hospital where he stayed overnight for observation,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“He was lucky to escape with cuts and bruises.”

Last Monday (August 10) police released CCTV footage of a car driving nearby at the time of the incident.

A 19-year-old Leopold man presented himself to a police station last Friday evening and investigators had since interviewed him, police said.

Police released the man and said they would charge him on summons with a number of offences including careless driving and failing to stop and render assistance.

“Police would like to thank the public and media for their assistance,” the spokesperson said.

Police were unable to provide a time frame for the summons this week but expected the man to appear in court in March 2021.
