A ruptured gas main at Kardinia Park has caused the closure of Latrobe Tce between West Fyans and Kilgour Sts this afternoon.
Both VicRoads and CFA announced the leak about 1.30pm today as crews closed the major road.
“There is a hazardous gas leak at Moorabool St Newtown,” a CFA spokesperson said.
“Hazardous gas is being released and is spreading towards Kardinia Park.”
CFA advised locals to avoid the area as emergency services investigated the source of the hazard.
The authority also advised nearby residents to close all doors and windows.
“Anyone experiencing wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing should call Triple Zero (000).”
A VicRoads spokesperson advised crews had closed Latrobe Tce as due to a ruptured gas main.
“Motorists should consider Shannon Ave to avoid the closure,” they said.
“The closure is under the control of emergency services and will re-open as soon as it is safe to do so.
“VicRoads signal engineering team is monitoring conditions in real time and adjusting traffic signals to minimise disruptions.”
