Dell cliff ‘shift’ delays green project

By Michelle Herbison
UNSTABLE cliffs at Clifton Springs’ The Dell beach has forced an educational regeneration project to relocate and delay plans until May.
The Independent reported in August The Dell’s closure had led to Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association postponing its community environment day for the second time this year.
Locals worried the area could face long-term closure because it was shut to the public for six years until 2008 due to cracking cliffs.
City of Greater Geelong’s Rodney Thomas confirmed this week that the majority of the area was open to the public while fencing contained maintenance works.
“Horizontal shift of up to 500mm has been detected in certain areas over the past nine months. A number of mitigation measures have been put in place, including groundwater pumping.”
