NIGHT games could shine at the Cats’ heartland next June after the completion of Geelong Football Club’s $48 million stadium revamp.
The Cats want to play their first home game of the year under the lights in round 10, halfway through the season on June 1 and pushing the 2012 fixture’s seven home games at Geelong into a latter-season rush.
The new Simonds Stadium lights, with a price-tag of $10 million, will boost the Cats’ fixture flexibility and dramatically enhance their marketing ability. At the same time, the stadium overhaul at Kardinia Park will lift crowd capacity beyond 33,000.
Cats chief executive Brian Cook has broached the idea of Friday and Sunday twilight games at Kardinia Park as well, auguring for an exciting new breed of AFL football at Geelong.
The AFL fixture for 2013 is due for release in October.
