Geelong is mourning the death of Dean McInnes, a member of popular local children’s entertainment group The Mik Maks.
Mr McInnes, 32, died suddenly on Easter Monday.
The group, which described Mr McInnes as the “cheeky” Mik Mak, announced his death on Facebooke.
“Dear Mik Mak Family,” the group posted.
“It is with greatest sadness we let you know that today Dean passed away.
“His passing was sudden and we are devastated.
“The Mik Maks will therefore not be performing for period of time. We will be communicating further details soon.”
The announcement shocked The Mik Maks’ thousands of fans.
More than 1300 messages of condolences and grief have been were posted on the band’s Facebook page in the following days.
The Mik Maks have build a large fan base around Australia, including a particularly devoted following in Geelong.
The band comprised Dean and brothers Joel and Al. They last performed on Good Friday at Inverleigh and Easter Saturday at Torquay.
Mr McInnes underwent surgery in December last year to remove an abscess from his brain.
He returned to the stage earlier this year after his recovery.
Mr McInnes was also a 2009 premiership player for East Geelong.
“Deano was a great bloke and a brilliant and tough player who was instrumental in our drought breaking premiership win against Bell Post Hill swapping between CHF and the ruck,” the club posted on its Facebook page.
“He also got back to play a few solo tunes at the club every now and then as well.
“He will be sorely missed and the East Geelong Football and Netball Club passes on its condolences to Dean’s brothers Joel and Brian and their families at this tough time.”
“Rest in peace mate.”
