Cop says unnecessary but…Lara calls for 24-hour force

By Vanessa Valenzuela
LARA RESIDENTS have vowed to continue pushing for a 24-hour police station despite the town’s sergeant saying extended opening hours are unnecessary.
More than 1300 residents have signed a petition demanding extra police to operate the station 24 hours daily.
Sergeant Andrew Wharmby said police supported the call for more officers but believed nearby Corio station could handle after-hours calls.
“I’m not overly concerned with us not being open 24 hours,” Sgt Wharmby said.
“Corio is available if we need help. It’s not a big issue at this point in time.
“Residents may feel it is safer with someone being here but Corio isn’t too far away.”
Ward councillor Cameron Granger said Lara’s station could handle extra police.
“I’m pleased to see Lara residents have written in (to council),” he said.
“I’m preparing a motion so the State Government understands that residents want more police in the town.”
Cr Granger said a lack of police in neighbouring suburbs meant Lara officers were forced to attend incidents outside the town.
“There is not enough police in northern Geelong. Whenever there is an emergency, police from Lara might have to go to Corio, leaving a small presence in Lara.”
Council election candi-date Kylie Grzybek believed Lara’s growing population required ongoing police presence.
“We only have two lots of patrols on during the day at Lara and no patrol at night,” she said.
“We have to rely on the Corio police station, which is a busy station.”
Mr Grzybek said introduction of a 24-hour station would reduce crime at Lara.
“It’s a good deterrent to know there’s police available in the area.”
