Unions warn of Easter lock-outs: Threat over parks

By John Van Klaveren
UNION action threatens to close local parks over Easter, according to Environment Minister Ryan Smith.
He blasted the unions for “locking Victorian families” out of parks and reserves.
Local parks at risk included You Yangs Regional Park and Serendip Sanctuary.
“It is extremely disappointing to hear that the unions are trying to lock Victorian families out of our parks this Easter weekend,” Mr Smith said.
“Parks Victoria staff not participating in the proposed industrial action will be working hard to maintain public access to all metropolitan and
regional parks.
“We urge Parks Victoria staff not to be dictated to by the unions and abandon any industrial action that has the potential to spoil thousands of family holidays.
“The Easter break is when families spend time together and so many choose to do that in our parks.
“I call upon the unions to immediately cancel the planned industrial action and allow Parks Victoria staff to continue the good work they do over the
Easter weekend.”
State Government heard unions would target “parks with gates”.
Community and Public Sector Union secretary Karen Batt said the escalated action was in response to the overnment refusing to put forward a reasonable offer.
“Members have been out of agreement for more than 300 days and the last pay rise received was paid over 570 days ago,” she said.
“The Government and Parks Victoria might be happy to starve us out but we are clearly determined to achieve a fair offer.”
Bureau of Meteorology predicts 30C for Good Friday, with temperatures in the high teens or low 20s for the rest of the Easter weekend.
