ORGANISERS have provided a “sneak peek” of entries to a competition seeking a landmark design for Geelong.
Icon for Geelong competition founder Andrew Senia said shortlisting was underway, with organisers ranking entries on a seven-point criteria.
The criteria included entries’ visual impact, originality, relevance, possibility of delivery and “marketability”, he said.
“We’re excited about giving the Independent’s readers their first look at some of the entries to the Icon for Geelong competition,” Mr Senia said.
“Bear in mind this is just a sneak peak. We have many other striking entries but have just selected a handful to whet appetites for the competition.”
Mr Senia’s law firm, Senia Lawyers, has put up $10,000 for the winner, to be announced later this month.
The competition seeks a design of artistic or design merit to help lift Geelong’s profile around the world.
Mr Senia hoped the winning design could eventually be delivered as an international landmark.
Other great cities around the world, such as Paris, London and New York, had their own landmarks that provided invaluable marketing opportunities.
“The Icon for Geelong competition is all about helping this great city along its path to a bright, prosperous future,” Mr Senia said.
“Hopefully the winning design can become reality to stimulate investment and jobs for Geelong for generations to come.”
Mr Senia said the organisers were arranging an exhibition of entries.
Geelong Independent managing editor Tony Galpin said the paper, as a competition sponsor, also planned to seek a popular vote.
“When the short-listing is complete we plan to publish a number of the entries for the public to have its say on the best design,” Mr Galpin said.
“The Independent will use the response to confer its own people’s choice award in the Icon for Geelong competition.
“Keep your eye on the Independent over the next few weeks for more stories and information before we announce the winners.”
